Aurora in Red and Yellow

NASA APOD · Jan Safar (Brno Observatory)
COSMIC MESSAGE

A large shock wave from the Sun on April 4, 2000, caused spectacular aurorae in northern skies. When the shock wave reached Earth two days later, the aurora was visible as far south as North Carolina. These high-altitude aurorae were accompanied by an unusual planetary alignment in the background. The photo shows an unusual multicolored auroral display from that night.
