Folding Europa

Astypalaea Linea is a broad, smooth region on Jupiter's moon Europa. These images, taken by the Galileo spacecraft in 1998, show details of its surface. The left image enhances small-scale features, while the right emphasizes large ones. Both versions show criss-crossing ridges, which scientists believe are formed by new material welling up through cracks in the ice. Europa's icy crust is constantly being reshaped by geological processes.
