This photo of the Mir space station was taken by astronauts on the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1996. Mir was orbiting about 350 kilometers above New Zealand's South Island. The station's spindly appendages and solar panels made it look like aying insect. Atlantis was approaching Mir for a docking maneuver, bringing astronaut Shannon W. Lucid for a five-month visit.
