NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

On January 31, 2000, satellites detected a powerful gamma-ray burst, the most distant explosion ever measured at the time. Astronomers used the Very Large Telescope in Chile to study the afterglow. This event showed us the extreme power of some cosmic phenomena, even if we don't fully understand them.
