The MODIS instrument on the Terra spacecraft recorded this view of Earth's north pole from 700 kilometers up. The image shows the ice cap with a radial grid centered on the pole. Frozen sea ice looks whitish, while open water or newly refrozen ice appears black. An impressive network of cracks in the shifting ice is visible across the liquid ocean below.
