Dark Matter in a Simulated Universe

NASA APOD · Tom Abel & Ralf Kaehler (KIPAC, SLAC), AMNH
COSMIC MESSAGE

This dark matter map from the Hayden Planetarium Space Show "Dark Universe" illustrates a simulated universe. The gravity of unseen dark matter is the leading explanation for several cosmic phenomena. These include why galaxies rotate so fast, why galaxies orbit clusters so fast, and why gravitational lenses strongly deflect light. Dark matter also explains the distribution of visible matter in the local universe and on the cosmic microwave background.
