The Perseus Cluster's X-Ray Skull

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Perseus Cluster of Galaxies, seen here in X-rays by the Chandra Observatory, is 320 million light-years away. This image doesn't show individual galaxies, but instead reveals a 50-million-degree cloud of gas. This intracluster gas is more massive than all the cluster's thousands of galaxies combined. From this perspective, the voids and filaments within the gas create a skull-like appearance.
