A Galaxy Collision in NGC 6745

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Galaxies don't usually appear like this. NGC 6745 is the result of two galaxies that have been colliding for hundreds of millions of years. The larger galaxy, once a spiral, is now damaged and distorted by gravity, appearing peculiar. Although direct star collisions are unlikely, the gas, dust, and ambient material in both galaxies interact intensely during such events.
