The Cosmic X-Ray Background

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The XMM-Newton telescope recorded this deep image of the X-ray sky, resolving some of the mysterious cosmic X-ray background into many faint individual sources. Early X-ray satellites revealed this background glow, and astronomers have worked to understand its origin. The image is color-coded, with red representing lower energy X-rays.
