A Daytime Fireball in 1944

NASA APOD · Norman Appleton
COSMIC MESSAGE

In December 1944, Norman Appleton witnessed a meteor so bright it appeared in the daytime sky, a phenomenon known as a fireball. Years later, he painted this scene, capturing the tremendous smoking fireball streaking across the sky. While fireballs are rare, the annual Leonid meteor shower, peaking around this time, offers a chance to see many fainter meteors.
