COSMIC MESSAGE
The Lagoon Nebula, M8, is a star-forming region about 5,000 light-years away. At its center lies the young open cluster NGC 6523, whose energetic light ionizes the surrounding hydrogen gas. As this gas reacquires electrons, it emits the characteristic red light seen in the nebula.
