COSMIC MESSAGE

This image captures a Stable Auroral Red, or SAR, arc. SAR arcs are rare and have been studied since 1954. This wide-angle photograph from Poolburn, New Zealand, shows an entire SAR arc surrounding more common green and red aurora. SAR arcs are likely related to Earth's magnetic field, though their exact formation is still being researched.
