A Phoenix Aurora over Iceland

NASA APOD · Hallgrimur P. Helgason; Rollover Annotation: Judy Schmidt
COSMIC MESSAGE

After an aurora had died down, a new burst of particles streamed from space, lighting up Earth's atmosphere again. The night sky lit up with an amazing shape reminiscent of a giant phoenix. This image from Iceland captured the unexpected display, a second act to the night's earlier auroras.
