COSMIC MESSAGE

The Stardust spacecraft, launched in 1999, used Earth's gravity to alter its trajectory towards Comet Wild 2. On January 15, 2001, Stardust made its closest approach to Earth since launch, coming within 6,000 kilometers of the surface. This gravitational assist maneuver increased its speed, sending it on its way to collect comet dust.
