Our planet is enveloped by a region of ionized gas called the plasmasphere. NASA's IMAGE spacecraft discovered its overall shape, shown in this ultraviolet image. The arm of the plasmasphere pointing towards the Sun, on the lower right, was a hypothesized feature never before directly observed. Bright auroral rings are visible over the northern Earth.
