COSMIC MESSAGE

The NEAR-Shoemaker spacecraft was scheduled for the first controlled descent onto an asteroid. After nearly a year orbiting Eros, NASA commanded the probe to land on its surface. While the spacecraft was not expected to survive the impact, it was hoped to transmit images with details as small as 10 centimeters during its descent, offering a close look at the asteroid's terrain.
