COSMIC MESSAGE
From over 1.4 billion kilometers away, the Voyager 1 spacecraft captured this view of Saturn's nightside. The image, taken in November 1980, shows the crescent planet casting a broad shadow across its bright rings. The translucent rings themselves also cast shadows on Saturn's cloud tops. This unique perspective was possible because Voyager 1 looked back towards the inner solar system.
