Aurora Over New Zealand
NASA APOD · Chris Petrich
COSMIC MESSAGE
Last weekend, a strong magnetic storm caused widespread auroral displays, including these 'southern lights' over New Zealand. The storm was triggered by a coronal mass ejection from sunspot group 9393. This wide-angle time exposure from April 1 shows towering red aurora suspended above the landscape. Aurorae occur when solar particles interact with Earth's atmosphere.
