A Cerro Tololo Sky

NASA APOD · Roger Smith
COSMIC MESSAGE

High in the Chilean Andes, the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory hosts some of the southern sky's most important telescopes. Here, we see the 4-meter Blanco Telescope, a major instrument of the past quarter-century. In the background, thousands of stars and the diffuse light from three galaxies are visible: the Small Magellanic Cloud, the Large Magellanic Cloud, and our own Milky Way.
