X-Ray Stars of 47 Tucanae

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The ancient globular cluster 47 Tucanae is so dense that individual stars are hard to distinguish in optical images. An X-ray image from the Chandra Observatory, however, reveals numerous X-ray stars hidden in its core. These X-ray sources are often binary systems where one star pulls material from another. The different colors in the X-ray image represent different energy levels of the X-rays.
