Comet C/2001 A2 (LINEAR) unexpectedly brightened due to its nucleus fragmenting, becoming visible to the naked eye. This mosaic of images from May 18, 2001, shows the comet's gas tail stretching across 1.5 degrees of the sky. The fluorescing filaments of the tail highlight the comet's activity.
