The Rotten Egg Nebula is a proto-planetary nebula, a star in its death throes. Its central star has run out of fuel and is contracting into a white dwarf. This process ejects gas at a million kilometers per hour, creating shock fronts that glow blue where hydrogen and nitrogen are ionized.
