In 1994, astronaut Mark Lee tested the Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue (SAFER) system, a backpack propulsion unit. This image shows Lee flying untethered in the bay of Space Shuttle Discovery, over 200 kilometers above Earth. SAFER uses small nitrogen thrusters, controlled by hand and computer, to allow astronauts to maneuver freely in space. This was the first untethered spacewalk in ten years.
