COSMIC MESSAGE
Meteors are normally silent, but the brightest ones, fireballs, can make sounds. These sounds are heard at the same time the meteor is seen, which means they are not sound waves traveling through the air. The sounds are likely created by very low frequency radio waves emitted by the meteor interacting with nearby objects. This four-frame animation shows a fireball and its lingering 'smoke' train from the Leonid meteor storm, recorded near Salvador, Brazil.
