Dust pillars are like cosmic mountains, dense enough to resist the harsh environment around them. This image shows the end of a large gas and dust pillar in the Trifid Nebula. A smaller pillar points upward, and an unusual jet points to the left. The pink dots are newly formed low-mass stars, slowly being stripped of their gas by radiation.
