Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglow: Supernova Connection
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
What causes gamma-ray bursts? This Hubble Space Telescope exposure shows the dwindling optical afterglow of a gamma-ray burst detected by the Beppo-SAX satellite on December 11, 2001. The burst's host galaxy, billions of light-years distant, is the faint smudge extending above and to the left of the afterglow. Rapid observations by the XMM-Newton satellite confirmed the fading X-ray light, suggesting a supernova connection.
