At the Edge of the Helix Nebula

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Helix Nebula is a planetary nebula, the outer layers of a dying star. This close-up from the Hubble Space Telescope shows intricate details at its inner edge. The central star, now a white dwarf, has ejected these shells of gas. Ultraviolet light from the hot core strips electrons from the gas atoms, causing them to glow in characteristic colors.
