Tail Wags of Comet Ikeya-Zhang
NASA APOD · Michael Karrer
COSMIC MESSAGE
As Comet Ikeya-Zhang approached the Sun, it developed a complex blue ion tail. This tail was made of ions boiled off the nucleus and pushed away by the solar wind. The animation shows how the tail changed over 30 minutes, influenced by the comet's rotation and solar activity.
