N44C: A Nebular Mystery

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The nebula N44C glows with an unusual mix of light. It sits in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small galaxy orbiting our own. Astronomers are puzzled because the main star in the nebula does not seem hot enough to create all the observed colors. One idea is that the star has a neutron star companion, which briefly emits X-rays when it passes close.
