This image of Melas Chasma on Mars combines two infrared views from the 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft. One image was taken during Martian daylight, showing cool temperatures in dark colors. The other, in false-color, was captured at night. This allows us to see different types of terrain based on how they retain heat.
