A Network of Microlensing Caustics

NASA APOD · Joachim Wambsganss (Ap. Inst. Potsdam)
COSMIC MESSAGE

This computer-simulated map shows caustics as sharp, bright curved lines, which are important in gravitational microlensing. Microlensing occurs when the gravity of foreground stars magnifies the light of distant objects like quasars. When a background quasar crosses a microlensing caustic, its apparent brightness can increase dramatically.
