The Lyman Alpha Forest

NASA APOD · J. Shalf, Y. Zhang (UIUC) et al., GCCC
COSMIC MESSAGE

We live in a universe filled with a 'Lyman-alpha forest' of hydrogen gas clouds. These clouds absorb light from distant quasars, leaving numerous absorption lines in their spectra. Distant quasars show more of these absorption clouds than nearby ones, indicating a denser 'thicket' of Lyman-alpha clouds earlier in the universe's history.
