M101: The Pinwheel Galaxy

NASA APOD · Jean-Charles Cuillandre
COSMIC MESSAGE

M101, also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, is a striking example of a spiral galaxy. It sits about 22 million light years away, close enough for detailed study. Scientists think a close gravitational interaction with a neighboring galaxy created waves of high-mass, condensed gas. These waves compress existing gas and trigger new star formation.
