This image from Apollo 11 shows the far side of the Moon. Unlike the near side, which is relatively smooth, the far side is rough and heavily cratered. We only saw this side for the first time recently, because the Moon is tidally locked to Earth. The lighter highlands of the far side are older than the dark maria of the near side.
