DEM L71: When Small Stars Explode

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Massive stars die in spectacular explosions, but smaller stars can too. Sometimes a white dwarf in a binary system pulls enough mass from its companion to become unstable, triggering a nuclear detonation. This Type Ia supernova remnant, DEM L71, is the aftermath, still expanding in the constellation Volans.
