NGC 1275: A Galactic Collision

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

In NGC 1275, one galaxy is slicing through another. The dusty spiral galaxy near the center is cutting through a large elliptical galaxy, visible mostly on the lower left. Galaxy collisions happen slowly over millions of years, with gravitational tides distorting each galaxy and gas clouds lighting up with new star formation.
