COSMIC MESSAGE
Mercury, a planet more than a third the diameter of Earth, appears as a dark dot against the Sun's disk. This rare event, a transit of Mercury, allows us to gauge the immense size of our star. The Sun accounts for about 99.9 percent of all the mass in our solar system, with a diameter of about 1,400,000 kilometers.
