COSMIC MESSAGE
This colorful telescopic view shows dim outer regions around M57, the Ring Nebula, in Lyra. M57 is the gaseous shroud of a dying sun-like star, about one light-year across. Roughly the same apparent size as M57, the fainter barred spiral galaxy IC1296 is at the lower right. Early 20th-century astronomers would have called it a spiral nebula.
