COSMIC MESSAGE
Mars appears red through a small telescope, which is its most striking feature. This color comes from rust, or iron oxide, which makes up about 10% of the Martian soil. The oxygen for this rust primarily comes from carbon dioxide gas, which constitutes 95% of the Martian atmosphere. Mars will be closest to Earth in nearly 60 millennia on August 27.
