COSMIC MESSAGE

Massive stars create heavy elements in their cores and then blast this enriched material back into space when they explode. Cassiopeia A is an expanding debris cloud from such a stellar explosion. Light from this supernova reached Earth about 340 years ago. This process of stellar birth, life, and death recycles material, allowing new stars to form.
