Aurora Over the Chugach Mountains

NASA APOD · Calvin Hall (Alaska's Aurora)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Aurorae are natural light displays in Earth's sky, caused by disturbances in the magnetosphere. These disturbances are typically triggered by solar wind activity. When charged particles from the Sun collide with atoms and molecules in Earth's upper atmosphere, they excite these gases, causing them to emit light. This photograph, taken over the Chugach Mountains, captures the colors of an aurora.
