The Crab Nebula from VLT
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Crab Nebula is the remnant of a star that exploded in 1054 AD, an event recorded by Chinese and Anasazi astronomers. This image from the Very Large Telescope shows the nebula's mysterious filaments. These filaments appear to have less mass and higher speeds than expected from the original supernova explosion. The colors in the image indicate the activity of electrons.
