Our Galaxy in Stars, Gas, and Dust

NASA APOD · John P. Gleason, Steve Mandel
COSMIC MESSAGE

The disk of our galaxy holds hot nebulae, cold dust, and billions of stars. The red nebulae are glowing clouds of hydrogen gas heated by nearby, bright, young stars. The blue nebulae reflect the light of nearby bright stars off fine dust. Perhaps most striking are the dark areas, including the Pipe Nebula visible on the image's top left.
