COSMIC MESSAGE
During Mars' record close approach, its two small moons, Phobos and Deimos, were a challenge to spot. Discovered in 1877 by Asaph Hall, they are seen here against the planet on August 22nd. Phobos is the innermost moon, and Deimos is the outermost.
