Islands in the Photosphere

NASA APOD · Gunther Groenez
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sunspots are dark, planet-sized regions on the Sun's bright surface, the photosphere. They are cooler areas anchored in magnetic fields. Before cameras, astronomers meticulously drew sunspots to track their changes. This sketch from March 6, 2001, by astronomer Gunther Groenez, faithfully records the intricate details of a sunspot group. Even with modern instruments, detailed drawings remain a valuable method for monitoring these solar features.
