NASA APOD · R. Ibata (Strasbourg Observatory, ULP) et al., 2MASS, NASA
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Canis Major Dwarf galaxy, only 42,000 light-years from the Milky Way's center, is our galaxy's closest neighbor. Its discovery in 2003 changed our understanding of the local group. This small galaxy is tidally disrupted, with its stars being pulled into the Milky Way.
