IC 405: The Flaming Star Nebula

COSMIC MESSAGE
The Flaming Star Nebula, IC 405, gets its name from lanes of rippling dust and gas. The bright star AE Aurigae, visible toward the right, is so hot that its energetic light knocks electrons from surrounding gas. When protons recapture electrons, red light is often emitted. The purple region's color is a mix of this red light and the star's blue light.
