The Rho Ophiuchi clouds display many spectacular colors, each highlighting different processes. Blue regions shine by reflected light from Rho Ophiuchi and nearby stars, similar to why Earth's sky is blue. Red and yellow regions glow due to emission from the nebula's atomic and molecular gas. Light from nearby blue stars excites this gas, causing it to emit its own light.
