The Supergalactic Wind from Starburst Galaxy M82

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The starburst galaxy M82 forms stars at ten times the rate of our Milky Way. This rapid star birth and death create powerful winds and supernova blasts that push gas out of the galaxy. This image combines data from the WIYN Telescope to highlight the complex structure of this expanding gas plume. The outflow, known as a supergalactic wind, is a dramatic consequence of intense star formation.
