COSMIC MESSAGE
In May 2003, Mercury, the smallest planet, crossed the face of the Sun for about five hours. This image from the SOHO spacecraft captures the tiny, dark disk of Mercury as it transits the enormous solar disk. Such transits allow astronomers to refine measurements of planetary orbits and the Sun's size.
